Transitional Kindergarten

Welcome to the SBCEO Transitional Kindergarten web page. This website serves to support families, local schools and districts with information regarding the implementation of the Kindergarten Readiness Act,  and the subsequent Transitional Kindergarten (TK) experience. Transitional Kindergarten provides eligible children with the opportunity to learn in an enriching environment that nurtures their growth.

What is Transitional Kindergarten?

Transitional Kindergarten is the first of a two-year program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate and is locally determined. Each elementary or unified school district must offer Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes for all children who are eligible to attend.    Pursuant to law SB 1381 EC 48000c, a child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if a child will have his or her fifth birthday between September 2 and December 2, 2014 and each school year thereafter:
